The 400 series covers the nickel-free chromium stainless steels, in two distinct families. Ferritic grades (409/409M, 430) are non-hardening, magnetic, and economical — 409M is the Indian structural workhorse for railway wagons and bus bodies,
while 430’s bright finishes serve appliances and kitchen panels.

Martensitic grades (410, 420) harden by heat treatment: 410 for valve trim, pump shafts and fasteners; highercarbon 420 hardens to ~50 HRC for cutlery, surgical instruments and mould plates. Because these grades carry no nickel, their pricing is stable and independent of LME nickel movements — a genuine cost advantage for the right application.
